Find the right license record

Get a full professional name and license type. Then use the state record, with the right board selected.

A matching name is the beginning of the check. Read the status and any public documents linked to it.

Get enough detail to search

Ask who would carry out the assessment. Get the person’s full professional name, role, and license number if the service can provide it. Save that reply. A first name and a photo in an ad give you much less to check. If the service has not assigned anyone yet, ask when the name will be available. You need a person to look up, rather than a promise about a team.

California’s Department of Consumer Affairs search includes public records from the boards for medical doctors, osteopathic doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacies. An osteopathic doctor is a physician with DO after the name; that license uses the osteopathic medical board. The search was checked September 28, 2026.

Choose the physician’s board

In the records checked September 2026, medical doctors, called MDs, fall under the Medical Board of California; doctors of osteopathic medicine, called DOs, use the Osteopathic Medical Board.

Both can be found through the state consumer affairs search.

Use the role the person actually holds. If a name search returns several people, compare the supplied license details before drawing a conclusion. If nothing matches, ask the service to clarify the spelling and board. Do not guess that a similar name is the same person.

Check a nurse practitioner’s record

A nurse practitioner is a nurse with additional training. California’s rules, checked November 3, 2026, let nurse practitioners assess health concerns and prescribe when they hold the required authority. A nurse practitioner with 103 NP certification can work without written procedures agreed with a supervising doctor in certain group settings where a doctor also practices. One with 104 NP certification can work outside those settings without those procedures. Ask how this person works with a doctor during your visit. The California nursing board’s search, checked September 28, 2026, lists the registered nurse license, nurse practitioner status, and a separate furnishing certificate connected to prescribing.

Ask the person to explain the role in the visit and where to find the relevant record. If the profile uses terms you do not understand, keep the exact wording and ask the board or the professional for help. There is no need to translate a license category into a claim about someone’s skill.

Read a physician assistant’s record

The Physician Assistant Board licenses California physician assistants, or PAs. The law checked September 28, 2026 requires a signed practice agreement and a supervising doctor. That agreement sets out the care the PA may provide, how medicines are ordered, and how the doctor is available for advice, consultation, or referral. Ask whether the doctor will be on site and how the PA reaches that doctor during your visit.

That board publishes formal accusations, discipline, and citations when applicable, but its public record does not disclose investigations or malpractice information.

Ask how the supervising relationship works for your visit. Keep that question separate from whether a public disciplinary document exists. The record has a defined scope; it does not answer every question about a working relationship or a proposed treatment.

Know the limit of a clean result

A medical board record with no public action does not rate the doctor’s skill. It can also leave out past settlements, because California makes only some settlements public. These limits on the public records were checked September 2026.

Save the page you found and note when you checked it. Read linked documents in context rather than relying on a short status label. If a record raises a question, take that exact question to the board or the professional. Once the person’s record is clear to you, move on to the product and pharmacy checks. A license lookup is useful because it answers a specific question, not because it finishes the whole decision.
