Care decisions begin with clear questions

# Identify the exact product

Peptide is a broad description. The full product name, its form, and its status give you a more useful question to ask.

Ask for evidence about the exact medicine being proposed, rather than reassurance about peptides as a group.

## A category name leaves too much out

A peptide joins amino acids, small building units that join into proteins; the name describes chemistry rather than a single treatment.

The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is the agency whose approval is at issue. Get the non-brand name, called the generic name. Keep it beside any brand name and the proposed form. Keep those details together. A study or a label for a different product may not answer the question you meant to ask.

As of September 26, 2026, the relevant federal distinctions were an FDA-approved drug, a preparation made through compounding, or an unapproved drug product.

## Some familiar names have approved products

The September 2026 records include approved semaglutide products under Ozempic and Wegovy, and approved tirzepatide products under Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) belong to specific approved products and uses; the brand name alone does not describe every form or indication.

An indication is the condition or use described in a medicine’s approval. Ask which product is under discussion. How does that choice address the reason you came? These examples are not a list of treatments to choose from on your own.

## Compounding changes the question

With compounding, the drug comes from a pharmacist, doctor, or registered outsourcing facility that makes it, in place of a finished approved product. An outsourcing facility is a maker that registers with FDA to compound sterile drugs. Sterile means prepared to be free of living germs; this description was checked September 2026.

FDA’s September 2026 position is that a compounded preparation has no FDA approval and no premarket FDA check of its quality, effectiveness, or safety.

Premarket means before marketing begins. Ask why this form of the drug is being discussed and what else could meet the need. Then ask which pharmacy would make it. The reason to consider this route and the status of the finished drug are separate parts of the discussion.

In the September 2026 framework, an outsourcing facility registers with FDA for making sterile drugs. Sterile describes the absence of living germs.

## Research language leaves the care question open

A research label did not keep a product outside drug law when the seller marketed it for use in people. In warning letters to sellers, FDA treated such products as unapproved drugs. This was the agency’s position recorded September 26, 2026.

[Source: Official source record](https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/warning-letters/gram-peptides-721806-03312026)

Those letters contain allegations concerning the recipients, rather than court findings.

If an offer mixes research language with promises about your health, pause the comparison and ask what product is actually being proposed. A label intended for laboratory work is not an explanation of clinical care. Keep the offer’s exact words so you can ask about them without relying on a summary.

## Do not use a code as proof

A listed product has an identifying code, the National Drug Code or NDC. Having that code does not prove FDA approval, the agency says in its September 2026 information.

[Source: FDA product-code directory](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-approvals-and-databases/national-drug-code-directory)

When someone claims approval, request the actual approval record with the product’s full name. If the answer points to a listing number instead, ask how that listing answers the approval question. The source notes show why the kind of record matters. Take the distinction into the visit, so the discussion can move from a broad treatment label to the actual medicine and its evidence.
